Some Plumbing Safety Tips

Plumbing safety is a huge issue; one can never be too cautious. Always know & practice the basics of safety; especially with home improvement projects, whether it be DIY or as a professional plumber. Plumbers oftentimes work in potentially hazardous environments, around all sorts of harmful substances like:

  • Toxic elements like lead, sulfur dioxide, and asbestos.
  • Mold, mildew, and bacteria.
  • Adhesives, solvents, and solder.
  • Around open flames, natural gas, and combustible materials.
  • Exposure to bio-hazards like raw sewage.
  • Exposure to toxic animal droppings that can cause sickness and disease.

With any do-it-yourself plumbing or repair in your home, following proper safety procedures and stay alert. Anything you notice that is unusual should be of concern, especially if it has to do with plumbing.

Do:

  • Know all Florida plumbing codes and laws.
  • Be informed. Make sure you read all instructions and reference any safety problems that may arise.
  • Protect yourself. Have all the necessary safety tools and accessories available close to you while working. Wear gloves to protect your hands. Wear safety goggles to keep dust, sparks and debris out of you eyes. If appropriate, wear a face masks to ensure you do not breathe harmful fumes.
  • Be cautious at all times.
  • Read all labels, instructions, manuals and warnings.

Don’t:

  • Do not work if you are physically impaired. Being tired and/or sick can lead to injury or impaired judgement.
  • Use tools as intended. Make sure you are not forcing any tools. Use the right tool for the job.
  • Ignore building and safety codes.
  • Carry tools in your pockets.
  • Ignore the smell of natural or sewer gas.
